The four questions
Before adding gear, answer four questions: how long will you be out, what is the weather doing, how far are you from help, and how much water can you carry? Those answers should shape the list more than a “ten essentials” graphic.
- Water and a way to carry enough for the route.
- A simple navigation backup, even when the trail is familiar.
- One warm or waterproof layer for the forecast you have, plus the one you might get.
- Food you will actually eat when you are tired.
- A small first-aid and repair kit sized for your trip.
- Sun, insect, and temperature protection.
Leave the fantasy kit at home
If an item only solves a problem you are unlikely to face on this particular route, it may belong in the car rather than your pack. Good preparation is specific, not maximal.
